Kiosk development relates to setting up a fully operational kiosk from scratch. The main activities covered under the ambit of kiosk development are – development of suitable software, setting up of suitable hardware and ensuring smooth operation and functioning of the kiosks.

Kiosk Development

A kiosk is generally known as an information kiosk, display screen, contact centre, work area and food preparation area. A number of organizations like ICC and Philips are involved in kiosk development.

Kiosks were originally designed as a convenient way to distribute information and other resources to customers in a busy public place. Today kiosks have grown to be a preferred way of receptacle for providing information and transactions not only in the business enterprises but also in other fields including public services, entertainment and other areas of human activity.

There are many parts of a kiosk apart from the hardware which can be used for the purpose. These include – the display screen, PC and software used for the kiosk as well as the keyboard, the LCD monitor or other output devices and the print management and information storage.

Display screen: This is the hardware screen where the user can view the displayed information. LCD monitors are used in a great number of kiosks. Another important part of the kiosks is the display screen which displays the information in the form of text, icons, video, images and the like.

PC: This is the computer which will be used by the kiosk. In kiosks that are used in institutions and offices, PCs are provided with the necessary peripherals in order to deliver the services which are provided to the kiosk.

SOFTWARE:Software is the term used for the set of instructions or programs installed in the kiosk. These software programs may be pre-installed or it may be downloaded through the internet and so on.

HARDWARE:Hardware mainly refers to the outer portion of the kiosk. This is the hardware component of the kiosk. The label, screen, cabinet, enclosure and locks are termed as the hardware of a kiosk.

ASSOCIATED INFORMATION:Information connected with the hardware is known as related information. Information may be in the form of –

o Remote access: This involves hooking up the PC or laptop to the kiosk server.

o Name, phone number, contact details, a map of the area being covered by the kiosk.

o What is the purpose of the kiosk?

o What are the expected functions of the kiosk?

o Have you explained it in English?

o Can you speak a little of the local language?

o Are you familiar with the fingerprint of the machine reader? If so, can you make a placard which reproduce a fingerprint image of the reader onto the PC.

o Will the machine be locked?

o Is it rounds?

o Is it functional in all days?

Ammounting Plate:In order to provide an placard whichfitting onto a handle, an ammounting plate is fitted onto the handle. It is usually made from stainless steel and the size ranges from 3/8″ to 1″ (400 pages). It holds the paper in place when folded but if required can be tied together with the use ofokslaptops or walls to act as a divider. Secure Toilets: To facilitate traffic in a busy terminal, most kiosks have a secondigrate origin which you may use to the populate the terminal. It is useful to have a manual which shows the correct procedures for usage.

First Lesson: The operator of the kiosk should be trained to use a computer so that ancommand would be issued by the operator.

Second Lesson: The PC which is connected to the,, should be uncombined and connected to the keyboard cable so that it is easy to use.

Third Lesson: The technician should be familiar with the keyboard and user’s manual so that he would be easy to find.

Kiosk Development: A software is required which will support the kiosk software. This software is connected to the kiosk hardware through a connection device which will accept the signals from the PC and generate them into a language the user understands.

There are two types of kiosks available today.

As a manufacturer may use a PC, a laptop, tablet or a smartphone to demonstrate products to their clients.


Just like any other kind of technology, there are two developments associated with kiosks.

One is the expansion of the kiosk into a component of the retail establishment. The other is the use of kiosks to give information to customers.
